Today‘s big world Catholic news story is the translation of Pope Francis’s comments at a small gathering of 200-300 people, mostly Pentecostals, in Italy yesterday.  The pope views the Catholic relationship with Pentecostals as a path to unity.
Why isn’t the pope interested in bringing protestants back to the true Church?
Briefly, the Pentecostal movement was hatched by an American named Aimee Semple McPherson.  Since Brazil’s World Youth Day, Pope Francis has shown the world that he is a Catholic charismatic.  And his public witness is increasing.

ELMER GANTRY was written by Sinclair Lewis.  I saw this film at age 10 and it made me deeply suspicious of religion.  All of my life I’ve been wary of television evangelists.  So, the view I have of Pentecostals/Charismatics?  Unhinged, phony and even sickening.
In the film, the character of Sharon Falconer was based on elements in the career of Aimee Semple McPherson, a Canadian-born American evangelist who founded the Pentecostal Christian denomination known as the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel in 1927.   Wikipedia.

In the Catholic Church, Pentecostalism/Charismatics = the Catholic charismatic movement, fully embraced by Catholics since Vatican II’s appeals toward ecumenism.

Renewal Ministries 4 minute video of Pope Francis at the June 2014 Catholic Charismatic Renewal Convocation in Rome.  RALPH MARTIN spoke there. Martin is the founding director of the International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Office, currently located in Rome.  Next, see Zenit’s Pope Francis’ Comments and Address at Charismatic Renewal Convention.  There the pope says, “I expect from you that you share with all, in the Church, the grace of Baptism in the Holy Spirit.”  NOTE:  in the pope’s comments, he refers to “the great Vatican II protagonist” CARDINAL SUENENS and recommends reading the cardinal’s books, Charismatic Renewal and Ecumenism and Charismatic Renewal and Service to Man.  This is news to me!

Renewal Ministries is a main source of U.S. Catholic radio programs.  I once listened daily to KBVM and I didn’t know they were charismatics until very recently!

“Pope To The Pentecostal Church:  We Are On The Path to Unity”

Pope Francis’s comments, an excerpt:

“When we walk in God’s presence, we find brotherhood,” asserted the Pope. “When instead we stop, we scrutinize each other too much, and we set out on another path, that of gossip. … And in this way it begins, from the first moment the division of the Church began.  “And it is not the Holy Spirit who causes division! …

“From the very beginning there has been this temptation in the Christian community.  ‘I am from this group, you are from that one.’  ‘No! I am the Church, you are a sect’, and so on. …The Holy Spirit creates diversity in the Church … diversity, rich and beautiful.  But, at the same time, the Holy Spirit creates unity, and so the Church is one in her diversity.

“To borrow a phrase used by an evangelical, a phrase I love, it is the ‘reconciled diversity’ of the Holy Spirit, Who creates both of these things: diversity in charisms, and harmony in charisms”.

  1. Hi Nina,

These are lies are from people who make Youtube videos like this to infer that Pope Francis is the Anti-Christ or the False Prophet in the book of Revelations; others say he is (an evil) Peter the Roman, the last Pope, of St. Malachy’s prophecies. Both sides (extreme right and left) falsely accuse him all the time. This particular video was obviously done by someone on the extreme right.

It is a very dangerous thing to spread these things for many reasons. One reason is we will have to stand before God on this matter. If it is a fearful thing to judge a priest; how much more the Vicar of Christ! Another reason is that people are SO eager to criticize the Pope in order to criticize the Catholic Church and excuse themselves from following Her. We do not want to be responsible for that!

It must be remembered that, as the Vicar of Christ, he has a lot to answer for, and therefore he must ever be mindful of his responsibility as a religious world leader and the Head of the Church in union with Christ. Who would want to stand in his shoes?! He knows he will have to stand before God and is humbled by this grave responsibility; so he often asks for the prayers and blessings of those he serves, both Catholics and non-Catholics alike, just as he prays for all and blesses all.

Pope Francis knows he cannot win people to the Catholic Church by convincing intellectual argumentation. He realizes they must first be attracted by authentic love which shows itself by humility, sacrifice, respect for each individual personally and their freewill, and gratitude for the gifts God has given every person whom He has created. But we see he is attacked by right-wing Catholics for ‘consorting with sinners’ much like Jesus was.

Pope Francis style is different than former popes, but it is what is needed today. To help give a better understanding of Pope Francis, how he acts, and public response, please post this: “The Most Misunderstood Pope in History” Please watch this Vortex episode and pass it to your family and friends:

If you are not familiar with the Vortex, I’d like to recommend it to you. He has a free short ‘to-the-point’ program he sends daily for those who request it and a fuller programming with all sorts of Catholic teaching for only $10 a month.
