Poll: Help Archdiocese Improve Pro-Life Image

We at Pro-Life Action of Oregon recognize a gaping hole over at the Archdiocese of Portland’s  website. Namely, where do visitors to the site QUICKLY find outreach services for women in crisis pregnancy?  Visitors to the site include sidewalk counselors who we network with.

Many more pro-life activists in the Portland-Vancouver area will be called upon to assist in a crisis pregnancy.  We need to access those resources available through the Catholic Archdiocese.

Planned Parenthood’s new Abortion Chamber on N.E. MLK will create a higher number of women and girls seeking an alternative to abortion. These women typically are unaware of alternatives.  Pregnancy counselors at Planned Parenthood seldom recommend adoption or keeping the baby.  This has been documented by the researchers at Stop Planned Parenthood and American Life League and elsewhere.

Planned Parenthood’s new abortion mill on N.E. MLK, Jr. Blvd., opens Sunday, February 14, 2010.  Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, is the featured speaker at the “grand opening.”

Rabbi Levin – Governors Must Nullify Roe v. Wade

Be sure to watch the video of Rabbi Levin’s fire and brimstone pro-life speech!

Leading a delegation of Orthodox Jewish rabbis, pro-life leader Rabbi Yehuda Levin fired up hundreds of thousands of pro-life advocates gathered at the 37th March for Life, and told them to lobby their state governors to use their state’s constitutional rights and nullify Roe v. Wade.

“Write millions of letters addressed to Justices of the Supreme Court,” shouted Levin. “They legalized abortion on demand, tell them they must fix it now!” The animated crowd joined in chorus with Levin, chanting, “fix it now!”

Planned Parenthood Abortion Clinic escort strikes protester Lila Rose

Pro-Life Action of Oregon wants to remind activists:  protesters must always have a video for self-protection.  We do not know whether Lila Rose videotaped this incident.

– Legal charges are pending against a male Planned Parenthood escort who struck pro-life activist Lila Rose on the hands on Thursday outside an abortion clinic. She warned that the surprising attack should not help create a “double standard” that hinders clinic protesters’ free speech rights.

Rose, the president of Live Action Films who has led undercover investigations into the abortion provider, was not injured in the attack.

Embryonic Stem Cells, California’s Prop 71 a Failure

This is an example of the dangers of medicine mixing with politics—Rush Limbaugh (paraphrased)

INVESTORS DAILY                                      January 12, 2010

California’s Proposition 71 was intended to create a $3 billion West Coast counterpart to the National Institutes of Health, empowered to go where the NIH could not — either because of federal policy or funding restraints on biomedical research centered on human embryonic stem cells.

Supporters of the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative, passed in 2004, held out hopes of imminent medical miracles that were being held up only by President Bush’s policy of not allowing federal funding of embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) beyond existing stem cell lines and which involved the destruction of embryos created for that purpose.

Pope Benedict Reframing Environment Issues to Include Humanity, Born and Unborn

Pope Benedict Reframing Environment Issues to Include Humanity, Born and Unborn.

The protection of the environment must be connected to the protection of human life, particularly the unborn, said Pope Benedict XVI today. In his annual address to the Vatican diplomatic corps, Pope Benedict XVI attempted to disassociate concerns for the environment from the anti-human population control ideologies that often characterise the environmentalist movement.

“If we wish to build true peace, how can we separate, or even set at odds, the protection of the environment and the protection of human life, including the life of the unborn?”

Tax Measures Attract Strange Allies

January 8, 2010

Pro-Life Action of Oregon: Measures 66 and 67, including abortion funding, supported by Planned Parenthood and Archdiocese of Portland

Despite abortion funding, the fight to pass Measures 66 and 67 has made strange allies – Planned Parenthood and the Catholic Archdiocese of Portland.

Pro-Life Action of Oregon has confirmed that Planned Parenthood is recruiting volunteers for phone banking to urge:

“ voters to support Measures 66 & 67 to protect funding for reproductive health care [ abortion and birth control ] and other critical services like education and public safety.”

The Catholic Archdiocese in Portland is also urging Catholics to vote yes on the two measures.  See ‘Archdiocese Backs Tax Increase’ [ http://sentinel.org/node/10604 ].

Nina Rhea, founder of Pro-Life Action of Oregon, expressed her group’s grave disappointment in the Archdiocese and Planned Parenthood’s shared goal to pass the tax increase measures.

"Whenever Planned Parenthood lobbies for something, it’s a red flag.  Catholics are always called to help the poor and vulnerable,” Rhea said. "However, it goes against Church teaching — and our individual conscience — to make our tax dollars available for abortion.  The Church teaches that abortion is always an intrinsic evil."

Mrs. Rhea acknowledges that our tax money already goes to Planned Parenthood.  "But this doesn’t mean we can’t speak out and oppose an increase to their coffers."

Both Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Rights Action League-Oregon are lobbying hard to pass these tax measures.
Several concerned Catholics have written to Pro-Life Action including James Welsh who says,

“I hope that when our Archbishop learns of their deep involvement, he will retract his support for the tax increases.”

Archbishop John Vlazny is scheduled to speak at the annual Pro-Life Rally on January 17 in Pioneer Courthouse Square.  The rally is sponsored by Oregon Right To Life. The archbishop could not be reached at the time of this release.

Pro-Life Action of Oregon placed a call to the Archdiocese.  Upon hearing that both Planned Parenthood and NARAL were urging supporters to vote yes, the Archdiocesan Chancellor Mary Jo Tully replied, “That’s not a bad thing is it?”

After being asked whether the archbishop knows about Planned Parenthood and NARAL’s lobbying efforts, Chancellor Tully replied, “No, I don’t think he knows.”

Pro-Life Action of Oregon also made a follow-up phone call to the Office of Justice and Peace to obtain Matt Cato’s reaction to Planned Parenthood’s lobbying.  "It’s coincidental and doesn’t change what we’re lobbying for."

Cato says the Archdiocese is lobbying for health care, education, and police funds.

Pink and Blue Coffins: Feast of Holy Innocents

We can all learn from each other how to mourn the slaughter.

California Catholic Daily – “This year’s event was special”.

“For the past two decades, Sacramento area pro-life Catholics have annually observed the Feast Day of the Holy Innocents, Dec. 28, in a special way. Starting in the evening with a candlelit procession beginning at the plaza in front of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in downtown Sacramento, from 50 to 200 Catholics have processed to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church about a mile away while praying the Rosary and singing hymns. At Our Lady of Guadalupe Church a special Mass is celebrated for the Feast of the Holy Innocents and to pray for an end to abortion in our society. “

Planned Parenthood Leads Tax Increase Lobby

Updated 01/07/10

Pro-life Action of Oregon has just confirmed the reason for Planned Parenthood’s increased level of involvement to pass two tax increase measures in Oregon:  ABORTION FUNDS!  They are bumping up their recruitment for phone bank volunteers.

In an email to supporters, below, Planned Parenthood reveals,

We are urging voters to support Measures 66 & 67 to protect funding for reproductive health care [ abortion and birth control ] and other critical services like education and public safety. [Empasis added.]

Re: Measures 66 and 67, Special Election Jan. 26

Dear Supporter,

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon Needs YOU to
Support Our YES on M66 & M67 Phone Drive

As you know, Oregon’s January Special Election is less than 3 weeks away. We are urging voters to support Measures 66 & 67 to protect funding for reproductive health care [ abortion and birth control ] and other critical services like education and public safety.  If we do not raise additional revenue, severe cuts to these vital services will leave our women and their families vulnerable.

The opposition has spent millions of dollars in misleading ads.

We need YOU to use your voice to give voters the truth about these measures and protect critical family planning services.
Ballots will be mailed at the end of this week. We are ramping up our efforts to ensure voters understand why they need to vote YES on Measures 66 & 67.

Planned Parenthood will host a Voter Education Phone Drive in Portland to help make sure that we WIN on January 26th. We want to reach over 10,000 voters and we need YOU to help us reach our goal.

Please sign up to participate in the Voter Education Phone Drive by emailing kyle.white@ppcw.org or by calling 503-280-6150 x2173. The dates and times of the phone drive are listed below.

Archdiocese approves Oregon tax increases

ARCHDIOCESE BACKS TAX INCREASE, Catholic Sentinel, January 7, 2010 issue

In an interview with the Catholic Sentinel, Matt Cato, director of the Archdiocese of Portland’s Justice and Peace Office, is claiming that raising taxes — on businesses during a recession — is in line with Catholic Social Teaching.

From the U.S. Bishops

Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
A basic moral test is how our most vulnerable members are faring. In a society marred by deepening divisions between rich and poor, our tradition recalls the story of the Last Judgment (Mt 25:31-46) and instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first.

Yet, isn’t raising taxes NOW not a burden on those of us who can use our earnings to DIRECTLY HELP the poor and vulnerable first?  How can we trust organizations with our money?

Opponents of M66 and M67 are business owners who will be unable to create jobs!  Visit www.StopJobKillingTaxes.com for more facts.

Included in a long list of Measure 66 and 67 advocates — who stand to fill their coffers with tax money — are pro-abortion groups:

Oregon’s Special Election is January 26, 2010 – The Voters’ Pamphlet is in the mail this week.  Pro-Life Action of Oregon is recommending you VOTE NO!!
